Hey, folks!
I'm Victoria Crandall. Thanks for tuning in to the inaugural issue of All Killer/No Filter, a weekly newsletter on African tech PR & comms.
So....after ghostwriting for two years, it feels good to step out from the shadows. Scratch that. It feels good as hell!
For a while now, I've been chomping at the bit to share the lessons, rants, stories, tips, and musings from my work as an African tech publicist.
And I will try my best to never bore you, dear reader. I don't want you to end up looking like Gus who seems like he's downed one too many Star beers.👇🏼
On with the show.
Let’s talk a little about me. What I’m about. Also, let’s talk about the rabbit hole that we might fall down together in the pages of All Killer, No Filter.
Some fun facts:
I've lived in West Africa for 7 years. Last year, I moved from Abidjan to Lagos by road. It took 8 days. I literally showed up to Lagos in a Danfo. (Long story.)
I'm a burnt out ex-cocoa trader & researcher. I don't mince words about my misgivings with the industry.
I've lived in 6 countries (🇸🇾🇦🇪🇪🇬🇲🇦🇨🇮🇳🇬) over 12 years. Some cool stuff I was lucky to experience: a Kurdish wedding in Qamishli, Syria; chocolate-making in Madagascar; and sitting in the cockpit on an Asky flight to Bamako. (Hello white privilege)
In my PR work, my #1 goal is to help African tech startups communicate their message effectively, authentically, and powerfully to the world.
I want founders to put forth compelling ideas about their companies, to translate their business acumen into powerful stories, and gob smack journalists.
Lastly, I want to play a MAJOR role in eliminating the tsunami of crap that is hack PR:
empty, gobbledygook press releases
blatantly obvious self-promotional content masquerading as editorial
self-congratulatory language like leading and pioneering
I will be thrilled to contribute, how ever small, to the ecosystem that way.
Until next time,
Victoria
